Hi i have Windows XP Pro SP2 with all the recent updates, and essentially an updated anti-virus. I have installed a few things in past couple days, like Maya 6.0 and InstallShield 11.5 but both have worked before so it is less likely to be their fault. This error message keeps on popping up every time i right click ANYTHING except the desktop (e.g. any file, icon on the desktop, start button - everything). I guess this is somehow caused by an error while loading up right-click menu, but i have no clue what to do. I have searched for that 'EXCTRAC~1.DLL' and it does not exist on any of my hard drives...so now i only suspect that something is either wrong in the registry and/or explorer.exe itself...
    Thanx ahead:)

P.S.BTW this is the text version of the error in case image will be gone 4 whatever reason

This EXCTRAC~1.DLL is not a Microsoft DLL file. It is more than likely one from a virus or something like that. I can not find anything on the error message or that DLL anywhere on the web. Let's try this basically because we have to start some where.

To download HJTsetup.exe To Download HijackThis go to the following: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5
    Filename = 1137518044HJTsetup.exe
Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Open a TechSupportGuy forum Reply window for this thread, to have ready to paste the Hijackthis log into. Click once to place the typing cursor in the reply window.
At the top of your TSG/browser window, hit Edit then Paste
You should see your copied Hijackthis log appear in the reply space....then, submit the reply
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Unfortunately I am not one of the resident HJT specialists, I can read the log files but since I am not certified on HJT log files just yet I can not comment other than to say one of the HJT log techs will be here to diagnose the log file and fix your problem that is in it. Please be patient.

You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix these with HJT – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [VIRUS] C:\prkiller.exe

    DownLoad http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

    C:\prkiller.exe

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

    START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
    Empty the recycle bin
    Boot

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ (W2K/XP Only)
    · Install ewido.
    · Run the application
    · Click on scanner
    · Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    · When the scan is finished, Set all items to delete
    · Apply all actions
    · look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
    · Save the report to your C: Drive
This will take some time to run!
    RE-Boot
Post that log and a new HiJack log

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

Uhhm....well 'O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [VIRUS] C:\prkiller.exe' that one isnt a virus, that's just a registry name i used to distinguish it from other plain ones: that's a process watcher/killer - something liter and MUCH MORE useful than standard task manager...as for the status of my system - it is unlikely to be a virus, most probably it's incorrectly installed/uninstalled software but the main question for me is:
what does DAX mean, and where does it come from cuz i've found few forums about DAX errors in google, but none of them were my case...mostly it refers to Delphi developers getting DAX errror, however the nature of the error is far away from mine (it's not a right'click pop up)....

Sorry - ur right I didn't read deep enough as there were many virus hits on it but it was that a virus would stop that program

I saw the Delphi also but as you said nothing close

Run Ewido and see if it finds anything

Hey, i think i've found it!!
My idea about right-click context menus was right! I went to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers using regedit.exe and deleted a weird entry that didn't appear in my right-click menu. It had to do with a program called (don't laugh!) EXTRACTOR (it searches binary files for embedded files - i used it to modify my Hitman: Codename 47 game files). Now, once i deleted that - NO MORE DAX ERROR on a right click in windows explorer! BUT! Still, it does pop up when i right click START button and Recycling Bin....but nowhere else!
    -----------------------------------------------------
So, now the question is: How to edit/modify right-click context menu of Start button and recycling bin?? There has to be a way, since the program modified it to give me an error...

Thanks to you guys for help, i wouldn't have digged in registry otherwise!(y) :)

    Hi,

I am working on a computer that also receives the DAX error message when using a Real Estate leads software. I have used the spykiller scan as mentioned above and have copied the results. Please review below and let me know what I can do to remedy this error.

    Thanks.
