We have a GeForce 8400 video card with 512 MB DDR2 ram. Our PC's ram is DDR type.
I'm wondering if the two types of ram are in conflict or if the card is possibly defective. When we plugged it into the PCIe slot, nothing would appear on the monitor. I shut it down and restarted the PC with the cable hooked to the onboard monitor port while the 8400 card was still connected. We got no picture there either. When I unplugged the 8400 and restarted with the onboard port, everything was fine.

Is this a conflict with the 2 different types of RAM, or are the two types seperate entities?

    Thanks,
    Michael

Those two types of RAM are separate entitites, true, and the reason you couldn't get video out of the onboard port is that the onboard graphics is turned off automatically when you put another graphics card in.

So it seems unaminous that the card will be fine to use, but since I can't get video out from the 8400, could the card be bad? Could or should I install the software before installing the card? It seemed that we installed the 5200 we are upgrading from before we did the software.

What software are you talking about? Drivers? They have to be installed after connecting the device (video card). You should test the video card on another computer to see if it is fine or not.

If you are upgrading a video card, these are the basic steps you need to follow:

1 - Uninstall old drivers from old video card

2 - Remove old video card from PC

3 - Install new video card into PC

4 - Boot up and install new drivers for new video card

If you try to run a new video card with old drivers installed, it can cause many different problems.
