    Hi techies,

My dell inspiron 4000 laptop is not powering up. When I plug in the power supply to the wall outlet the battery lights up but as soon as I plug it into the laptop the light on the battery goes out. The part on the laptop where the battery is plugged in also smells burnt when I plug it back out.

Is this a battery problem or is it as I feared, the power section on the board is fried? Do I have to get a new laptop or can that part of the board be replaced?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Orville

This clearly seems like a question for Dell, and in any case, it's impossible to diagnose this kind of problem from afar.

    Hi Orville

Can you power the laptop up with the battery removed and the ac adaptor connected? If not then it probably is a montherboard problem. Most Dell laptop motherboards can be replaced and it should be cheaper than buying a new laptop. If the system is under under warranty give Dell a call.

    Hi techies,

I just found out that the motherboard for my dell inspiron 4000 laptop is damaged. Another technician checked it and said he saw a crack which suggested that it might have been dropped. Does anyone know where I can get a motherboard for the laptop at a decent price.

    Thanks.

    Perhaps E-Bay?

    Good luck finding the board.
I just read on the dell users site that the 4000 motherboards tend to have a high failure rate and are hard to find. Dells price is about $635.00 for a replacement motherboard. They also say that it uses the same motherboard as a C600 (Latitude). This is what was posted, but check with Dell to be sure. BOL
