i formatted my computer 2 days ago. I installed win 2000 pro as the operating system. The default windows media player never plays any files mp3 to avi nothing. Always errors. I tried installing never versions including the beta release 9 series. Still the same errors. I couldnt figure out. Need help! And im ok with not using the media player but i can not uninstall it permanently. The little media player that appears on the left middle corner of the boxes still appears there and causes the error to repeat. i associated all file types with other programs i erased the old media player manually because there is no uninstall option for it. The worst is whenever i click a file type that (only once) windows media can play and the file type is not associated with windows media the little media player appears there and creates an error and restarts explorer.exe...what a problem ha? waiting for a man who is brave and full of knowledge. Thank you!

Hiya and welcome

Win2000 comes with WMP 6.4. If you open it up via:

Start | Programs | Accesories | Entertainment

Then, View | Options. Formats tab. Make sure all the boxes are ticked, Apply and OK.

What are the error's that you're getting? If they have a Details button, click it and copy/paste the contents here.

If you go to Windows Explorer. Tools | Options. File Types tab

Scroll thru until you find AVI. Click to highlight it. What does it say it opens with? Also, is it the familiar grey icon?

We'll look at AVI for now. Whilst still in the options with the AVI, click Advanced.

Then Edit. Is the Application Used to Perform the Action as follows:

"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe" /Play "%L"

Press Cancel to come out of it all at the end.

the error message says that explorer.exe has created errors and will need to restart and it restarts. My only problem is with the little thing that appears on the left middle side of all the windows when you click a file type that windows media can play. all the file types are associated with other programs but the little media player that appears on the windows is creating errors even if i click it once. when i click them twice winamp plays what i want but still the same little thing restarts the explorer. its a bit complicated. im a mcse mcsa myself but i couldnt do no good for myself. need help. thanks for your reply.

So, you're not using WMP, but Winamp. Are the file associations pointing that way as mentioned above, but with WinAmp in place of WMP?

Also, what appears on the left middle side of all the windows? Is it an icon of some desription? If so, can you describe it?

If you also go to Run and type REGEDIT. Locate this key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpeg

Does it say this on the left:

mpegfile
video/mpeg

Also, what file types are you trying to open? Is it All Media files, or just a few, say AVI and MPEG?
