Hi Folks, neither Defrag or Scandisk will run when I select them from system tools. As soon as you hit the start button my PC crashes, nothing responds at all, other than the mouse cursor still moves.
I've managed to start and run both applications in safe mode.

As far as the sound is concerned, I'm getting no system sounds nor will audio CDs play. (I've just noticed that the disc detector icon is no longer in the system tray). When I go to sounds in control panel and try to preview a sound I get an error, for example, "Windows cannot play the C: \WINDOWS\media\logoff.wav file. It may be damaged or may not be a valid sound file. Replace the file and try again". Volume Control can not be changed, it's almost as if it's grayed out.

    I'm using Windows 98 SE.

    Thanks

Hi johnnysaint , Try right clicking on "My Computer"...Properties...then drop down the Systems Tab. See if you have any Yellow triangular marks by any of your Sound Devices ? If so .. Remove them , then Re-boot , Windows should find them and re-install automatically.
Now you Scan Disc & De-frag could be a number of things, you may have background programs running or perhaps a screen saver, AV.
but make sure you do not have any virus or such . I do not have the link ,as I am currently at work but go to www.trendmicro and run the free Virus Scan and see what it finds. Also do you have Adaware & Spybot ? Those too should also be d/l and updated and run periodically . Win 98 is notorious for your problem, but as long as you can complete Scan Disc & De-Frag in Safe Mode, you should be ok. But it is still nice to run them normally.
    Good Luck !!

Hi THEROACH, thanks for coming back to me. No yellow triangular/warning marks. I too thought there might have been a conflict or error on one of the devices but nothing is showing.
Some sounds appear to be present but this varies from reboot to reboot, with the majority of sounds showing errors.

As far as Scandisk and Defrag are concerned, I have an up to date Anti Virus and use Ad aware every week. I've had problems in the past with Scandisk getting "interrupted", this isn't this problem, it's as if the application just doesn't fully load although no error is shown.

    Thanks

Would you please run a Hijack This , so that we can take a look at your puter ? It might help us to see what your problems are ?
Thanks, we'll get you straightened out . ;)

Johnny, other than having quite a bit of Running Programs, I see nothing that would cause the problem you are describing. In your original Post you state that you are being prompted to Replace your sound File . The only suggestion I have is , to do just that . To do this right click on "MY COMPUTER" , click on "Properties" then click on "Device Manager". Highlight your Sound Device, then hit Remove your Sound Devices , Re-Boot and Windows should find and install them for you.
As far as your other problems, something must be running in order for your Scan Disc and Defrag not to work out of System Tools. If you would like to try a good Defrag tool , Diskeeper Lite is a good Freeware, the link is provided below. You do need to eliminate some of your nonessential Running Programs in your Start Up though. A link for essential Start Ups is also provided. Please let me know how you make out. (You live in my favorite City in the world BTW) Good Luck !!!!

THEROACH, I've done what you suggested with the Sound Devices and so far everything seems to be working fine.

I've also trimmed the start up programs. I'll run Scan Disc and Defrag in Safe Mode from now as it seems a lot easier and quicker.

I'm so pleased you like Liverpool, after a couple of decades under an economic black cloud things are really improving as we move to European Capital Of Culture in 2008.

    Many thanks for your help.

    Cheers
