I agree with Tony. A few of the guys I work with swear by it. Have you also considered partitioning your drive? :)

I also recommend Speed Disk, but was curious....
You never stated how long it's been since you last defragged. If it's been a long time, it's gonna take a long time.

Also, if you have a screen saver did you disable it? Also if you stop all programs running in the background (ctrl-alt-del and select everything except explorer (some say systray also) it will run faster. Or it's faster in safemode.

Maybe try some of this before purchasing new software?

    I should have mentioned

    - I put a new a 60 gb drive in last Nov (first defrag since). A little less than 20 of the 60 gb was currently being used. It was just partitiioned into 2 partitions of 30 gb each. Therefore I then had a partiton of 30gb with 10 free and another of 30 gb with all of it free. I was defragging the partiton which had the 20 of the 30 used and that is what took so long. Prior to this I had a 20 gb drive with about 5 free and it used to take 3 + hours.
I also run the defrag in safe mode to ensure nothing else is running and otherewise, if I recall it kept starting over because of 'disk activity'. Maybe I have other problems that are taking this so long to complete?

Thanks for all your help and any other suggestions.

Me thinks you need to defrag more often. I defrag every two weeks or so. Since you just defragged, do it again. It should take a fraction of the time and if so....no problem with your program.

I have read the ME defrag is faster than Speed Disk and much faster than the Win98 defrag. A lot of people were downloading the ME defrag and using it with Win98. I use Speed Disk because I like being able to see what programs and data are where on the disk.

Your defrag should be pretty fast now that it has the partitions sorted out.

O&O Defrag is also a good utility. It has around five defrag settings, the minimum (Stealth) allowing you to work while it runs in the background. Also, while in cluster view, you can click on a cluster and a popup will appear showing you what data is contained therein. Dont' know if WinME is supported though. You might have to look into that.

I would agree that there's nothing wrong with your ME Defrag. Your long defrag was due to the length of time before you defragged. If you Defrag every couple of weeks or so it'll be maybe 10-20 minutes, depending on how much use/defragmentation you have.

Although I think you're fine with the ME defrag, others on this site have spoken highly of this free defrag program:

I use the full version of Diskeeper 7.0, as posted above, and must admit I really like it. I've got it set up in it's "Set it and Forget it" mode. Every so often the icon will appear in the system tray, as it defrags the hdd while still working away. :)
