Shut down all programs that run in the background before starting defrag.

before you defrag run scandisk sounds as if you have a problem with the contents
defrag does not start properley till it reaches 10% before that it is collecting info and checking fat
if you cant scandisk start up computer with your start up disk and run scandisk from dos

dude42ok....just another idea for you....I had this problem myself at one point. Turns out for me it was my web cam running in the background! If you have one hooked up, you might want to try unplugging that too, if you can't just "disable" it.

Definitely follow mark5019's suggestions too, and make sure your screen saver isn't trying to start up!
