To create the shortcut, you can Start-Search and find defrag.exe.

When you find it, right-click and hit create shortcut and let it go to your desktop.

Then cut it from your desktop.

Right-click your start button and him customize. Hit the advanced button. Go through the Programs folder as you would your menu to get to System Tools. Paste the shortcut to defrag there.

i get past "advanced" button which brings up "start menu items"...i see "system administrative Tools" which allows me to tick 1 of 3 items....no "system tools". don't see program folder.
if i try to open defrag.exe from the desktop, i get a flash of the program wanting to open but in a flash it quickly closes.
what do i do??

Ok. Me too.

Ok, after a double-check, here's the exact steps...

I assume you've got a SHORTCUT (not the file) to defrag.exe on your desktop.

Right-click your Start button, and hit Open all users.

Double-click the folder called Programs.

Under the Programs folder should be a folder called Accessories--double-click it.

Under the Accessories folder should be a folder called System Tools--double-click it.

You should be here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools

Move or copy that desktop shortcut into this folder.

dreamboat, everything worked fine to the point where i was able to add defrag.exe into system tools. however, when i click defrag.exe, the program flashes on the screen for a second and then closes. the defrag.exe must be corrupted in some way.

Agreed.

OR....the shortcut is.

What happens if you do a search for defrag.exe, and double-click it?

Or Start-Run and type "defrag" and hit enter?

EXACTLY what version of Windows?

Build...etc?

Open Windows Explorer, hit Help--About Windows...

Download the attached file.

Rename the file from defrag.txt to defrag.exe.

Put it in folder:

c:\windows\system32\

I'm like one build ahead of you, but I can't imagine they changed defrag...

Let me know.

:D

Ouch.
Sorry.
I don't know what to tell you but to reinstall/repair Windows and be prepared to have to reinstall your applications.

dreamboat, thanks for a good try.....think i'll just let it be...probably don't have that much to defrag and still have lots of space on my hard drive.
