I review posts relating to defrag. I deleted applog files, uninstalled unused files, emptied recycle bin and temp. folders. I even tried to run in safe mode (gave a scan?? error + a kernel 32.dll error). The hard drive "grinds" to 1%, and starts over to zero. I let it run all night, with the same results: nothing. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hiya djbeckett - welcome to TSG. :)

Try changing your screensaver to "none" and hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL and individually closing all running programs except for Systray and Explorer.

Then try defragging. See if it works that way. Good luck!

Sorry, I didn't mention that I did atl/ctrl before the last defrag, with no results. None is the screensaver that I had. Please try again!!!!!!

What OS do you have? Did you try Diskeeper as recommended above?

The first, and easiest thing to try, is to restart to Safe mode, and run Defrag there.
