I am trying to install from windows 7 disk and it just sticks on the "setup is starting" screen showing the 'busy' circle thing....I dont get it.
Is it because I didnt format the partition before I tried to install windows ?
Im going to put the drive in my pc as a secondary drive and see If I can format it ..and then return it to the laptop and try again ....I thought it would still install windows even though I obviously forgot to format the partition first ?
Thank you for your reply

as said in previous post,is the dvd/rom drive set as 1st boot device in your bios.when you have set this to boot 1st put your windows 7 disc in the optical drive, save settings in bios and exit, you could also check the windows disc is clean and scratch free.

Hi. I am booting from dvd...it is setup to boot from dvd drive...I have done this many times on my PC installing windows xp...always a straight forward job...but this just does not want to install.
First things first ....the laptop came to me a non booting laptop...I retrieved pics from hard drive by putting it in my pc and copying them over to my pc hd...some of the pics were not retrievable saying cyclic redundancy check thingy and some pic thumbnails were only showing half of the pic as if info was missing !!....then knowing all that needed saving was safe I then performed a fresh install of windows 7 from disk at boot up...reset bios...set boot order to boot from dvd drive ...and it VERY SLOWLY installed windows 7.
It took a couple of attempts then it finally installed...it ran very VERY slowly some things were normal and responsive...other things would be very slow and then crash...very unstable and slow.
So I did another install ...and another...another...no attempt worked.
This morning I performed another install (fresh start lol) and this time with some advice from a video on youtube I did it slightly differently and deleted ALL partitions...so I ended up with ONE large partition.
I then made a new partition...formatted it ..and tried again to install windows 7.
This time it nearly completed and then I got an error message saying "Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware"
I spent ages on this last night..being a novice..with OCD lol...and one thing I remember is performing (somehow) a hard drive test...which is failed...speedy test or something is it ??
I just wonder if I am wasting my time on something that is knackered ?
I now have no way of doing anything on the laptop other than getting into the bios....and attempting installs.
I dont seem to have made much progress on the forum with this problem..probably my own novice fault but I would like to know what my next step should be....can I somehow test the hard drive..memory motherboard ? or am i just missing something..doing something wrong somewhere ?
I have another laptop...same model (hp g56) running windows 7 ....and a pc running xp.
what can I do ?
Please help
Thank you

You have various symptoms pointing to a defective hard drive. It's highly probable that the hard drive is defective.

Thank you for your replies...I do appreciate your help and advice. I have just performed one LAST install for tonight...Ive been reading far too many different things today to be able to think or act clearly lol.

I may try one last thing and try and test the HDD with testdisk or something...but Im thinking it is knackered as you said.
It was a SMART test it failed by the way ....cant even remember how why where or when I performed that but ..it failed it anyway.
Thank you for your help...
any suggestions on a good place to buy another hard drive...they have many on Ebay for around £25 - £30 ?
Thank you

If it's a good laptop otherwise I'd buy from Amazon or buy.com or NewEgg or Fry's or some other reputable retailer. I assume that you are UK, so probably only some of those apply and there are no doubt others for you.

Well I decided to buy a new HDD today and just keep my fingers crossed that it was the right thing to do...It was...Installed Windows 7 first time...no issues at all in any way...and I am happy the old hard drive was knackered.
I would like to say thank you very much for all your help...and I apologize once again for my novice approach ...thanks again.

Your approach was fine--trouble shoot, eliminate possible zero-cost solutions, and then spend the big bucks. :)
