I have a Dell Inspiron 9400, running Windows XP Professional... A few days ago, after visiting a couple unusual websites, my pc seemed like something was running in the background while I was doing nothing on it. I figured it was due to the websites that I was on and since so much seemed to be happening (clicking noises, beeping as if an error messages was popping up, etc.) I opened up my task manager to try to figure out the problem. After checking a few websites to try to find out what all these processes were, I started deleting the iexplorer entries with the intention of reinstalling Internet explorer at a later time (or maybe not at all since I've been using chrome as my browser for some time. Also... I've had this continuing problem with my Internet connection where, after doing some research, I've been able to fix the connection temporarily by deleting winsock and winsock2 and reinstalling nettcpip etc, etc... And eventually my connection would be fine for a while.

2 questions... My PC is really messed up now since I deleted some processes in the task manager- how do I restore that whole situation? And is there a way to permanately fix my Internet connection without having to go through the whole winsock temporary fix procedure?

I've tried a system restore but it doesn't seem to work. Please help

You cannot "delete" processes, only kill them temporarily or suspend them (Process Explorer). They will be called upon by the according application when needed. Internet Explorer is part of your Windows operating system so it cannot be completely removed, especially not without making a mess.

1- Please click HERE to download HijackThis.
    2- Run the program.
3- Click on the Main Menu button if not already there.
4- Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.
5- Copy and paste the scan log from Notepad into your next reply.
6- Do not "Fix" anything unless advised to do so.

Try the Internet after restarting your computer in Safe Mode with Networking.

    If no luck,

Use a working computer to download the program. Save it to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the faulty computer and save the program to your hard drive before running it.
