Is there a way to delete or retrieve an email you've already sent before the recipient gets a chance to open and read it?

    No.
Not unless you can get to their computer and erase it before they read it.

Your email can travel to the other side of the world in a matter of a few seconds.

In some cases you can. For example, I'm running Outlook 2000 on an Exchange server and I can open a sent item and recall the message. It only works if the recipient has not yet read it, and I believe that it only works if the recipient is on the same server.
