I have a Dell Latitude D600 that on start up I get the "a disk read error" and will not go any further. When i do a dianostic I get an error on the DST short test fail error code-1000-0146. Is this the darddrive and if so, if I were to just get a new HD will everything be ok?

Most likely the hard drive has failed, you would need to install a new hard drive and reinstall windows and all your programs.

If you have a Fry's electronics in your area, they have the best prices on the old PATA laptop hard drives, which the D600 uses.

It may be possible to back up important data by using the method described in the link below, when done replace the failing hard drive and reinstall Windows. If this fails to read the drive you can try removing and re-seating the hard drive, then try again.
