dell dimension 8300 running very slow

    My dell dimension 8300 is running sluggishly.I have run the recent versions of spybot and ad-aware,nothing serious shows up.Task manager shows page file as 346Mb.I plan to find a recent bios.Thanks for any assistance

    I see a couple of suspicious entries in your HJ Log, but I can't help you out with that (against forum rules). I'm sure someone will give you a hand.

    Could you be more specific when you say "sluggishly". Are there specific programs that are giving you trouble?

    A good place to start is defragmenting your hard drive. If you haven't done this fairly recently, there's a good chance you'll see a speed boost from that. I would also recommend a program called Window Washer from Webroot, it does a good job cleaning out junk files. Possibly a program called C Cleaner. I've never used that one, but I heard it's decent.

    I don't see anything suspicious other than two instances of C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe which is the Windows Automatic Updates program.

    This could be a factor if it is misbehaving. To test, run services.msc and find Automatic Updates there and double click it to view its configuration properties. Set it to "disabled" for a test and reboot.

    If this resolves the problem I will have further instructions for you. If it doesn't, you can just reverse the procedure.

    I have a Dimension 8300 too by the way, :)

    Anyway, it would be helpful if you provide some further details:

    0 > when did the problem seem to be begin?
    1 > is it very slow to boot up?
    2 > do programs open slowly?
    3 > does the same behavior occur both on and off the internet. Or with no connection at all?
    4 > does it matter how long the system has been on, and does a restart improve things?

    Slow performance issues can often be due to overheating, so if the system is faster after it has been shutdown for a while and then restarted -- that would be especially suspect. To check for possible problems here, shutdown, open the case and blow out any accumulated dust. Then turn it
    on and check to see that the fan is working. Sometimes it helps to physically clean the fan.

    If a laptop, check to see that the vent is clear of dust and verify the fan is working. Temps and fan speed can usually be monitored with SpeedFan (except on Dell desktops), a free utility.

    5 > if you do a ctrl-alt-del, do any processes show excess cpu usage, other than System Idle Process?

    6 > If you open the Device Manager (run devmgmt.msc) and select the entry for IDE ATA/Atapi and select the Primary IDE > Advanced Settings, does it say the "current transfer mode" is Ultra DMA or PIO?

    If it says PIO or even just DMA (rather than “ULTRA” DMA, first ensure "Use DMA if Available” is selected, then select the driver tab and uninstall the driver and reboot. Then check again.

    *note that the above will not apply to RAID drive configurations.

    Do ctrl-alt-del to open up the task manager. Select the "performance" tab. Let me know what you see under:

    Physical Memory

    Total: this is your total installed ram -- "physical" memory
    Available: this is the amt of real "physical" memory presently uncommitted

    Commit Charge

    Total: this is the combination of total physical and virtual memory currently in use
    Limit: this is the total physical and virtual memory available
    Peak: this is the most you have had in use in this session

    Thanks for your reply.The system gradually has gone slow on boot up and all programs and internet explorer.Spybot and ad-aware take long time to scan.While scanning, if i try to another task, system will slow down.

    I don't understand. The computer supposedly has 512 meg RAM more than is now showing? If so, maybe a 512 meg chip has gone bad or somehow come loose? Windows XP will definitely seem "sluggish" with 256 meg RAM.

    If the Physical "total" says 261 something -- then Windows is only seeing 256 mb of memory at best.

    If the "commit charge" "total" is 361 something then the current usage is more than the detected ram.

    If "peak" is 465 something, then the peak usage was almost twice the installed (or detected) ram -- and that is the reason for the slow down.

    Try reseating the memory modules -- and try testing them:

    By the way my Dimension 8300 came with Rambus memory. This memory must be installed in matched pairs. If your motherboard has the same requirements and you do not have matched Rambus modules -- that is probably the reason for the discrepancy.
