You failed to obtain and save the XP drivers for the devices in that computer before you reinstalled XP. A reinstall of XP will rarely install the drivers for all of a computer's devices - which is why you want to have the drivers available before you start.

What's the 7-character "service tag number" of that Dell Inspiron 1705? Is the correct model number E1705?

Right-click MY COMPUTER, click Properties - Hardware - Device Manager, then click the + in Other Devices. What's listed in that heading?

Here is the Dell support and software site that's specific ONLY to your laptop.

I highly suggest that you save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can refer to it when needed.

------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the XP driver for the wired network adapter:

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller

Here is the XP driver for the wireless network adapter:

Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

Download and save them, close all open windows first, then install them. Make sure to restart your computer after installing each driver.

-------------------------------------------------------------

We need to determine if the graphics controller in that laptop is an ATI, Intel, or NVIDIA model because the Dell site for your laptop isn't being specific about which one it is.

Go into the Device Manager and double-click on the Video Controller(VGA Compatible) entry to open its properties window, then click Details(tab).

Look for a string that has VEN_####&DEV_#### as part of it, then advise what the 4 characters are that follow VEN_ and DEV_.

I'm guessing it's going to be the Intel model, but we need to make sure.

This is from the PCIDatabase.com site:

Device ID: 0x0298

Vendor ID: 0x10DE

Chip Description: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS

Vendor Name: NVIDIA Corporation

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the XP driver for the graphics controller:

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS

Download and save it, close all open windows first, install it, then restart your computer.

Download and save the driver files in a working computer, then burn off the saved driver files to a CD-R or USB thumb drive, then install them in the non-working computer.

flavallee,
I downloaded and are in my dell folder but when I try to connect (I am connected to a server at work via wireless and the signal is excellent) it says my web page is not available. When I click on to connect it looks for a dial up connection. Am I doing it right?

Here is the XP driver for the sound device:

SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major High Definition Audio

Download and save it, close all open windows first, install it, then restart your computer.

----------------------------------------------------------------

If that driver fails to install or advises you that the sound device isn't present, there's another sound driver at the site that you can try.
