so ive been trying to get my new dell laptop to connect to my d-link dir-601 router via a arris tm402p/110 modem and i have been having one hell of a hard time. i have connected the d-link router to the modem via an ethernet cable and also the modem is connected to a desktop pc with a usb cable.
the pc works fine with the internet, but when i try to connect my laptop its telling me to setup the router for the first time. so i proceed to do so in the "wireless setting" section of the router page and i click the "add wireless device with wps". Thats when it ask me to enter the pin or use the "push" method to add my laptop to the wireless device but it stay loading on that page forever and the internet icon says "no internet access".

The router undoubtedly comes with instructions. You need to create a wireless network on it first by physically changing your connection setup. You need to connect the Desktop PC to the Dlink router by ethernet cable, then go back into the settings page and get the network setup. This will allow the desktop PC, and laptop, as well as any other wireless device to be on the same network. Please read the instructions. They will point you in the right direction.

With typical residential service you only get one public IP address. Thus, if you have two devices connected to the modem only one will have internet access. Do as badness advised, and power cycle the modem when switching from the desktop to the router.

You can probably download as many as you want from D-Link's web site. :)

Why not? Does your desktop get an 192.168.0.x IP assigned? For this connection please show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

    Type the following command:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

You are connecting to a LAN port and not the WAN port, right?

Could be an issue with the ethernet driver, the NIC, the cable or the router.

ok so after a few hours of tweaking around with my router and the modem i finally figured it out. seems i had to plug the ethernet cable to my computer first to configure it and then plug it in the modem so it could work with my laptop, but then i need another ethernet cable if i want to be able to use internet on both computer since the usb cable wont work hehehe
