Daughter left me with her laptop computer that someone used & must have shut down wrong somehow. Now it tells you that the hard drive is password protected and you need to type in a password to boot up. Running XP and has never used a password to boot up so we are at a loss. Any ideas?

As you know, we can't help with passwords, the only thing is to find out who used the computer and ask tha person, what they have done to the computer.Did he/she put a password on without your daughter's permission? Otherwise the only other thing would be to go back with System Restore, before all this happened.

If the password prompt is appearing before Windows loads, then it's not Windows, and a System Restore or even a reinstall won't work. I think the D600 is a business laptop, so it probably has a hardware-level protection feature. If you can prove ownership, you may get help from Dell, but it may just be a really nice doorstop with a screen at this point.

Well, thanks all, I thought I would give you a try but I had a feeling it wasn't going to be that easy.
