My computer over heats (frequently shuts itself down telling me it detected it was over heating and it always feels HOT when you type) and it crashes (I return to my computer after a break to find it telling me it is recovering data after a crash) on a regular basis, won't run the Firefox browser properly, often runs slow

Can it be fixed or should I dump it and get a new laptop?,

    No geek here

What's the make and model of the laptop? And if it's running that hot, something must be wrong. Is there a fan that isn't working? Something of that nature?

While using the laptop are you in an area of good ventilation?

Download and install this, install and post the log on your next post.

Also, right-click your taskbar and click "Task Manager." Click the "Performance" tab and tell me what your CPU usage is.

Geez High school student you're making someone old enough to be your Grandma feel sort of dumb, but how do I take or get or find a log I did manage to download and install the program.

Also where do I find my Taskbar forgive me, but I was not brought up with computers

Did you do a scan with the program?

And the taskbar is the same thing as the Startbar. The terms are synonymous. I have attached some screenshots explaining what I need you to take screenshots of.

    -----

Also, download this program and tell me what the displayed temperature is.

I did a scan and when it went to my notepad it said "cannot find C:\program files\trendMicro\HijackThis\hijackthis.log" which is why I cannot copy this when I downloaded and saved this it did not save properly and instead of giving me a complete path it just saved as C:\ProgramFiles\

Ok, then did you install the other program I advised and look at the temperature? I'm also awaiting the screenshots.

As far as the HijackThis log goes, I will fix that issue if it becomes necessary. Until then, you can uninstall that program if you choose seeing as how it (from what you said) didn't install correctly.

OK HDD Health downloaded and it gives me a Temperature green bar that goes 1/3 of the way up, no temperature provided, (just so you know right now my computer is running pretty cool and not overworking), the second bar labeled Health said 98% with lots of red at the bottom

use the PrntScrn key then click on MS's Paint program, click on Edit then paste. From that you click on file>save and put it where you want it to go.
The Task bar is at the bottom edge of your window, where all the little icons reside.
