I have a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. When I turn the power on, The Dell logo and then the Microsoft Window XP logo appear, but then the screen goes black. It does boot if I start it on safe mode. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks!

    Hi Tweety ,

If the computer boots into windows in safe mode that means it should be an issue with the Operating system on the computer or the video drivers. Try running diagnostics on the computer just to make sure it’s not a hardware issue .Turn off the computer and then hold down the FN key and the power button and please check if you get any error messages. If the diagnostics passes that means no hardware failure. Then boot into safe mode and try to disable services by typing MSCONFIG in Run and then try to disable all the services and try restarting the computer normally .When it gets to Normal windows mode download and install all the new drivers for the computer .

If in case if the computer doesn’t boot into normal mode then kindly install the operating system.

Hi Rajesh, I haven't finished the diagnostics yet (will resume tonight when I get home from work), but so far I've received this error message:

    Error code 0146
Msg: Error code 2000-0146, Unit 1: DST log contains previous error(s)

When I continued the testing, I had just a moment before the screen changed, but it looked like it said:

Hard drive DST short test: failed.

I will continue the diagnostics at home to see what else turns up and report back.

    Many thanks!

If it failed the harddrive test it sounds like the harddrive might be toast.I also have a dell vostro 1500 and the only drivers available by the way are for vista and windows xp.There are no drivers for windows 7 for that model.I would maybe replace the harddrive first and then go from there. If it solves the problem just reinstall whatever operating system it came with and you should be good to go.

If it's harddrive failure, would I still be able to run in safe mode, as I am currently doing? I hope it's not the drive, but I spent the day backing up all my files just in case. The diagnostics are still running, so hopefully I will know by morning.

It might be that the drive is failing but isnt gone totally yet.I havent run a computer in safe mode in ages so with that i cant advise you.If it flunks the harddrive tests then you will know once and for all.The only other thing left that it could be is a motherboard failure.

    Hi Tweety ,

    Thank you for your response.
2000-0146 Short DST test failed that means the issue might be with the hard drive .Just to confirm that we can run 32 bit diagnostics on the computer .Hold down the FN+F2 key and would run PSA test once its finished you would get 4 options kindly select express test .If the test fails with the Hard drive kindly post back with the error code.

If you have active warranty, you can contact me directly by clicking on my user name, add me as your friend, and send me the system service tag, phone # with address.

    Hi Rajesh,

I ran the express test twice. The first time I receive the following error:

0F00:065D, Disk_0 - self test failed to read portion of the test

But the second time, everything passed.

Also, when I reran the diagnostics this morning, in addition to the errors noted in my last post, I also received error 0F00:1A44 on the Verify Test for the same blocks as previously posted for the read test.

Any clue? Thanks for all your help!

Unfortunately, computer no longer under warranty. :(

Well, looks like the HardDrive is toast. I was able to boot up a couple of times yesterday, but this morning when I pressed the power button, the power LED lit up and the HD LED lit up but then the HD made one clicking sound and the computer powered off by itself.

Hard drive on the computer has gone bad and needs a replacement .Wish I could have replaced the hard drive if the computer was under warranty. As the computer is out of warranty you need to purchase a new hard drive .Below Is the link which would take you to the parts and sales for the hard drive.
