I just spent an hour on the phone with Dell and he's telling me I need to do a clean install of my original operating system in order to get my system back up to speed. No way I'm doing that, and I know you guys can help get things back to normal. So it is a windows problem that is making system run very, excrutiatingly slow - I mean frustratingly slow.

What should I do first? Would a hi-jack log be helpful? I am running one now to paste onto this email.

Virus scanners tend to slow pcs down. On a healthy system, if you uninstall the virusscanner (which can be difficult), you will notice a dramatic increase in performance.

If I uninstall the virus protection, then I'm really at risk. I need to know what the windows problem is before I uninstall the virus protection. Someone suggested that McAfee doesn't work well with Windows - could it be the McAfee virus protection? Is it messing up Windows? Can you tell anything from the HJT log?

I took everything off the McAfee except the virus protection, took off firewall, security guard, backup, etc. Seems to be a little faster, but still not optimum yet. Any other suggestions?

I never experienced any problems with McAfee and Windows XP, except maybe if you call slowing down a problem.

Concerning the uninstallation of your virus scanner, that totally depends on you. Is your computer really at risk, so do you download a lot of Warez, or toolbars or 'handy' plugins than a virusscanner is a must. My workstation went three years without a virusscanner. I just watched what I downloaded and I updated regularly and had windows firewall always enabled. When I finally installed a virusscanner it not only showed no virusses but also made everything go twice as slow.

It seems like you have alot of additional programs like qtask, google desktop, weather.exe, applemobile device service. You probably never use these, so you might as well disable them (start ->run->msconfig.exe->startup

I see you turned of some components in the mcafee security center. Be sure to turn on your windows firewall now (start ->configurations->windows firewall->enable

edit:I hope other people in this forum can help you identify malware, IF you have it. I have little experience with this.
The things I mentioned above are programs that are considered safe and will therefore not be removed by antispyware/anti adware. If you notice little speed increase after installing all the malware removal tools you will find that the trusted programs are just as well suited for slowing down your computer. My dad's computer fell victim to to many utilities and has become rather dulwitted due to to many safe utilities running. If you don't find any malware, you should just look up every exe file listed in the log and find out what it does. If it is a service you don't use, get rid of it as it is only slowing your pc down (just be careful no to shut of any essential services).

I did disable some of the items in the start menu - thanks for the suggestion. I think I'll run it this way for awhile and see how everything works. If it is still slow, slow, then I'll take off the virus protection - I don't download internet stuff, but receive a lot of things that I have to download. I've had a bad virus once and it was a mess. thanks for your help and I'll check the .exe files and see if I can check that out too. Thanks.

you don't need an anti virus to constantly scan your computer. you just need to scan files that you have downloaded before you unpack or execute them. or am i missing something?

Well, if you say you receive a lot of material that you are not sure about you must definately keep the virusscanner, especially if you had virusses in the past!!

    blues_harp28 you got that right

a good place to start is to clean house . ATF-Cleaner is a nifty free little program to delete all temp files cookies and a general cleanup .
Startup programs is another reason for poor and sluggish proformance . I have only four in the startup but have seen people with over 20 .Check this; http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml , and look here too; http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm , and click start, run, and then type in this; msconfig.exe to open up the System Configuration Tool, then click the startup tab, which also shows what starts and runs with XP. uncheck what you don't want to start up .
When done run defrag . Now download Hijackthis . Save it to your desktop . Run it and paste the log in your next post . Hope this has helped .

blues_harp28 - i'm running superantispyware right now. then i'll run malwarebytes and see if there is anything there. I am not disabling virus protection. I have run ad-aware already, but turned off the ad-watch because it was annoying and i had no idea what I was approving or not..too many questions. thanks for the message.

padutch - I'll do these things too - I probably have 10-15 things running in startup, but am never sure which ones I don't need. thanks for the tips. I'll post HJT log when done with it all.

Hi let us know how you get on.
As you have posted a Hjt log..would be good to get a log expert to check it.

Post a new log after you have run the scans.
