I've checked out Compaq and Dell laptops and I'm leaning toward Dell for a new purchase. I'm down to choosing between an XPS 1530 or Inspiron 1525. The Dell sales force tells me I'm getting a much better laptop with better hardware, etc., in the XPS. Does anyone have an opinion on one over the other? I currently have a six year old Compaq that recently crashed but after reinstalling Windows XP its still kicking . But, I'm afraid it might not last so I'm preparing for its iminent death.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 notebook that has been more of a headache than anything. I rarely use it, I take it with me when I am on a call in case I need to connect to the internet.
It was a year old last month with approximately 25-30 hours of use. I have had to replace the HDD, the ram and it sounds as if the burner is going.

I may have just gotten a lemon but I don't think so....

I have two Dell XPS Desktops, a XPS 400 and a 420. The XPS models are more of a gaming computer, better CPU, better hardware, etc.

I love the XPS Desktops and I would purchase the XPS notebook if the choice is between an Inspiron and an XPS. :)

Thanks for your feedback. This is the first real negative I've heard about Dell. I'd like to get more feedback from others for both Dell and Compact. Thanks again.

There are hundreds of sites that perform thorough reviews. You'll find much more information there. Here you will only find personal opinions and anecdotal stories.

It will also help if you search for the right brand. I assume you mean Compaq not Compact. HP took over Compaq several years ago. There are only a few low-end Compaq-branded computers available.
