my brother has a computer and he keeps a lot of his important files on his desktop. yes we are aware that in hindsight that was a poor decision. one day he woke up and went on his computer and a ton of his files on the desktop were gone for no reason. we cant figure out why. i have asked him if he downloaded anything sketchy and he said no. we tried restoring the files using restore points but there werent any restore points to load, even though my brother has stated he created one in the past. we checked file history and it said it was turned off and we couldnt turn it on. the button that said "turn on" was grayed out. thats all we can think to try. how and why could this have happened, and more importantly can we get the files back somehow? any input welcome. thanks.

Are just the files on the desktop that is gone? What about his wallpaper and other settings, are they gone too? Usually that means that he is using a temporary profile, and that Windows had problems with this own profile and can't load it..

to echo what lunar is referring to, it’s possible that there was an issue loading the profile and he has a temporary one. The profile / folders should still be in the Users folder

Use Windows Defender and do a Full Scan.

Then download MalwareBytes and do a scan also.

we will try that, but as a side note, we already did a full scan with Avast antivirus, as well as scanning for corrupted files with PowerShell, so I don't know if that will add anything

hello. I cannot find where to start a scan in windows defender. I cannot even find where windows defender is. we looked up how to activate it and all we found were tutorials telling us to use the group policy editor. we tried to access it but it is not available on windows 10 home. I am entirely lost at this point. we still don't even know why his files are gone in the first place. sorry if I seem like I don't know anything about computers. it's because I don't
