All the desktop icons, start menu and task bar is gone except a picture of the wallpaper. What could be the problem? Am using a different PC to sent this message.

Welcome to TSG

first, bring up the Task Manager (ctrl + alt + del), go to File, New Task (Run...), type explorer.exe and click OK.

this should start the windows shell and you can check the event log, if you're getting an error, please post back.

Hi The_Oracle. Would it be easier just to put the cursor on the taskbar and right click and then click task manager. I use this way having podgey fingers.

Went to the task manager and followed your advice. When you create new task and type in "explorer.exe", anew window opens that enables you to explore C:, a: and even the desktop. But the moment you close the windows, all the desktop icons, taskbar and start menu disappears!

Do what Oracle said again, but don't close the window, so you can get to the internet...
Try these:

Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar (Line 195)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Hide All or Show All Desktop Icons (Line 172)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Restore the Taskbar to Default Functionality (Line 164)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Taskbar Is Missing When You Log On to Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q318027

Good luck!

Did you install any program lock win before?
Try set default start-up items at msconfig and reboot your mechine.
See the result how.

Go to RUN :-

1. Type - msconfig
2. General Tab - Normall Startup

OR

1. Type - msconfig
2. Startup Tab - Unclick all checkbox and click OK. [for Selective Startup]

JustJudy, thanks for your advice. When I go to Kellys-Korner website (all the three lines - 195,164 and 172) it doesnt work! All the lines return this message: "The service cannot be started either because it is disabled or it has no enabled devices associated with it code 80070422"

Hii Indranx,
Thank you for your invaluable advice. The problem is now solved! My desktop icons, taskbar and start menu is back. I went to run, then typed 'msconfig', to general tap and checked 'normal startup' and rebooted the system. THANK YOU. THANKS ALOT. Even ICT gurus were unable to resolve the problem. God bless.

WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL : explorer.exe running on high 100%

You will see that Explorer is running at almost 100% of CPU when you ALT/CNTRL/DEL. Simply click on processes, then click on explorer.exe and END THE PROCESS. This will allow you to go into the internet by using the FILE tab on TASK MANAGER and selecting new task, run. Go into the internet, www.google.com and look for Grisoft Free AGV. You will be able to go into the internet, download the program free Grisoft AGV virus remover. Run the program. It may take a long while for the program to scan, so click the selection at the bottom of the program that reads: "shut down when finished". This program is awesome and will be able to remove the new virus khhed.dll which is almost impossible to remove.
