Hi

I was here earlier with a problem I was having with my laptop all of a sudden randomly "preparing Windows to standby". Now that is not the problem :(

Ok

I have an Inspiron 1520-Windows XP 4G of ram. Laptop is about 6 yrs old and has worked perfect until about a week ago which it first started with the "windows preparing to standby". I have to add that in my power options I have the option NEVER TO STANDBY. This problem has not occurred again somehow, but it did it for about 3 or 4 days.

Problem now:

On startup my icons take about 3 minutes to load while the background wallpaper shows up in less than a second. If I do the startup in safe mode everything loads as it should. No problem.

Once my laptop is totally loaded on normal mode it works fine even if the icons took forever to load , with the exception that maybe twice a day the screen will go black for less than a second and come back to normal again.

What I have done:

I checked all my startup programs and I only left one on called Syntpenh because I read it has something to do with the mouse and scrolling of pages. (I am not computer savvy at all so this is really difficult for me :) I have done this while reading other posts and talking to some techs) I have run defrags (it always comes back saying there are some files that cannot be defragmented) , disk check which comes out ok , cleaned and compacted registries (with PC Tool Registry Mechanic which I downloaded after all this fiasco started to see if it helped), I have disabled and enabled after many tries my Norton Antivirus, even deleting it at some point, run Malaware Bytes. It wont show I have any virus. I do all my Windows Updates and I do not have the Netframe 4.0 which people say it causes problems.

I read in a post here that some people download a program called Hijack this and they post the results so someone in the forum can interpret and help??

Is this Hijack this program safe? If so where is the best place to download it? Is it easy to work with? (keep in mind if I get into trouble I wont know how to solve it :)

I really need help in this because I am trying to save this computer since a very important program I use (important for me :) (Paint Shop Pro version 7) only works in Windows xp and if my computer crashes or is rendered useless I will lose this forever since that version which I know so well will not work in modern operating systems. I also dont have the means of buying a new computer for a very long while .

I really need help? anyone?

Thank you so very much.

1- Please click HERE to download HijackThis.

2- Run the program.

3- Click on the Main Menu button if not already there.

4- Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

5- Copy and paste the scan log from Notepad into your next reply. Do not attach it.

6- Do not "Fix" anything unless advised to do so.

I can't see anything special in your log. You don't have much auto-loading to explain a slow Startup.

Is the User Profile Hive Cleanup service still installed on your computer, or have you tried uninstalling it?

cleaned and compacted registries (with PC Tool Registry Mechanic which I downloaded after all this fiasco started to see if it helped)
You should avoid Registry Cleaners, Boosters, Optimizers, TuneUp Utilities... This type of software will do a lot more harm than good, and should only be used by advanced users who really know their way around the registry. Most members coming here with WEIRD symptoms had their computer messed up by malware and/or registry cleaners. These utilities do not only remove what "they think" are orphan entries in the registry but legitimate files still in use will be deleted in the process, crippling some programs and Windows applications beyond repair.

Keep in mind that they will always find "errors" to fix, even on a fresh Windows install! In itself, this should be enough to convince non-believers...

Do I Need a Windows Registry Cleaner?

I will keep that in mind for sure. Truth is I downloaded the program and used it only when all these problems were already present. It was one of my attempts to try to see if anything worked, but now knowing this I will definitely keep that in mind.

Thanks again :)

Open HJT and click the "Main menu" button.
On the main menu, click "Open the Misc Tools" section.
In the list of "System tools", click "Open Uninstall Manager".
Click the "Save list" button (located on the right).
Please post the resulting text file.

I ask because a tech at geeksquad i think it was (I have talked to so many people :) I cant remember) told me if I deleted that I think it was that same program or file that I could maybe run into error messages each time I booted?

I asked you about it yesterday, but you never answered. :)

It's the User Profile Hive Cleanup service. I don't see it in your list of programs, but your log does show leftovers of the program. I can't say it will solve your problems, but it may be causing some issues.

Run the command and it should get rid of the service leftovers.

Click Start > Run > type cmd /k sc delete UPHClean

Press Enter.

After following Phantom's instructions concerning the "UPHClean", reboot.
If you are still having a lag on icons loading, click Start>Settings>Control Panel.
Click Add/Remove Programs.
In the list, select and uninstall "PC Tools Registry Mechanic 11.1".
The reason being that the "Startup and Shutdown service" component is a known resource hog that may be interfering with your startup load time.
