Hi

Experiencing problem with desktop not detecting / showing a secondary hard drive. Switched off the PC - unplugged and then plugged the hard drive back in - started up the PC - hard drive detected. Whist copying files from this hard drive to an external drive, PC loss connection with the secondary drive.

Any advice how to fix this problem?

Test the drive with the drive mfg's diagnostic. You download this from whomever mfg the drive ie WD, Seagate, whatever. Do both the long and short tests; the long test may take a while depending on the size of the drive.

Any advice on how to recover the data on this hard drive?
You can try running data recovery software such as recuva OR you can send it to a shop that does data recovery. Note this is NOT cheap. Where I live a very basic data recovery using software is $199.00 plus the cost of whatever media you want the recovered data placed ie you cannot recover to the same drive. The price goes way up from there.

I have a saying "Data you do not have at the very least two copies on separate media is data you do not care about" ALL drive fail; it is only a question of when your drive will fail.
