For some reason, my usual KDE desktop went south. The normal desktop appears for just a second or two and then is replaced with a different wallpaper, unwanted icons that it will not let me trash, context menu changes, etc. I tried an automatic repair installation, which didn't help. Tried choosing a different desktop at login, but it still just goes back to the strange desktop. I looked in the KDE Control Center and it still shows the proper settings. I use multiple desktops, but these are now ignored. Does anyone have a notion as to how to deal with this?

Everything is normal when logging into root, so it would seem that something has gotten scrambled in the user preferences for my normal login. Where are these preferences stored?

Since I last post on this, I created a new user account, which let me reset everything to my liking. This lasted until last night, when this also did exactly the same thing as before. I really need to know how to remedy this, otherwise I will end up with dozens of user accounts. Can anyone help?
