A few days ago my desktop booted up very slowly and I was not able to connect to any webpages or any programs which use the internet. I just left it to sit for a few days and tried to boot it up again today, it still booted rediculously slow (took about 10 minutes) but it's still not working so I figured I'd register here and ask for some help. The router which I have connected to my desktop's modem is used to give internet to my laptop is still working fine (I'm posting this from my laptop). I've tried to do a system restore on my desktop, but the restores get an error and don't work. Also when i do the system restores, my desktop icons wont load so i have to end the explorer.exe process and then run the process again, after which all the icons show. (this only happens after I system restore). Another thing that is weird is that I can still connect to AIM (the instant messanger) on my desktop, but nothing else. Not sure what to do at this point, hopefully you guys can help.

    Well, we're making progress. :)

Using MSCONFIG, disable groups of startup applications and services in Normal Mode and restart. You should be able to narrow down what is causing the issue that way.

well i looked at msconfig in safe mode and took note of everything that was running, i then booted to normal mode and edited my msconfig to look exactly as it does in safe mode and then restarted my cpu.. still cant get on the internet :( basically only had microsoft services running on bootup and id assume if it was any of those causing problems in normal mode theyd do the same in safe mode.

    You'd think...

For your paired down Normal Mode and the Safe Mode, please run this and post the results here, there's be two runs.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

    TASKLIST

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
