I recently, (this week), reformatted my hard drive.

I have nortons system works 2002, and firewall installed.

I have no fantasies that I won't get a trojan sooner or later.

Before everyone in my address book on OE6 gets infected, is there something I can do to protect them, or at least notify me when I become infected?

I was thinking of trying to add a slave email address on another server, (yahoo), to my existing OE6 addressbook as a contact. I was hoping to catch future trojans as they broadcast. But does this help, or do most trojans catch this sort of behavior.

hi hermit, your wrong about probably getting a trojan.
if you take precautions you probably WONT get one.
    two things.
if you havent got a firwall,
    go and download "zonealarm"
    www.zonelabs.com

go here and download "the cleaner"the best trojan scanner and killer on the market.
    www.moosoft.com

its a 30 day trial but worth the 30 bucks or so for a lifetime program.keep it updated weekly and your protected from most net nasties.

    good luck;)

    one thing to add.
    https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

go here and test your firewall......if all your tested ports dont show up as stealthed(invisible)then go for zonealarm above nortons firewall.

If you have NAV and NIS running I think you should be adequately protected, and you don't want to bog down your system with any further baggage.

You might want to put the firewall to a test using Steve Gibson's Sheilds UP and Leak Test probes available here:

    exactly my point $teve.

I have ZA installed, but I LOVE file share utilities for music. So I'm going to be opening a big hole when I install one.

    my original question is:

can setting up slave email addresses actually catch a trojan? (provided they are checked).

Here is perhaps a better question, Is there a safe file sharing program that is reccomended as safer ?

ok hermit, ill let you into a secret....between you and me ok,no-ne else knows this:D
i was very paranoid about getting hacked(again) so i use the above programs i mentioned for security......ive had and will have no problem at all,i also do p2p...i use kazaalite(spyware free) and right click and scan with norton, every completed download.
not sure about your email idea, but i always use an on-line client like hotmail or yahoo......much safer.

ive learned through boards like this one how to surf as invisibly and silently as possible, there is no such thing as being completely secure but we can advise people and help them to stay hacker free.
no need to be paranoid hermit........just sensible.

incidently, when i got hacked,it was a few years ago and i knew nothing.

Hermit the whole point of a firewall is not so much that they will stop a trojan from getting in -- that happens because you let them in through infected attachments or other programs -- but any attempt to get out will be caught by the firewall. The "slave e-mail address", if I understand correctly, might catch a "worm", many of which cull e-mail addresses and send out infected attachments, but probably would be no good for a trojan since they do not generally cross infect in that manner. It is somewhat a matter of definition -- the idea of the "worm" being that it is self-replicating.

Hackers detect the presence of trojans by scanning for typical open ports on which an installed trojan would be "listening". A firewall makes these "invisible".
