When a used computer I just bought (a different one that the one I previously posted about) boots up, it flashes a message that it has found new hardware, followed by the New Hardware Wizard asking where it should search for a driver for the plug and play moniter (which I already had). But if I click Cancel, it finishes booting up and I see no problem with the moniter. I'm wondering how I can get the computer to quit doing that since the moniter works fine with whatever driver it is using. Thanks, grandpaw

This new, used computer I just bought has an ATI Driver w82474en. Maybe it has something to do with the question I posted here. From a little looking, while I still don't know what it does or doesn't, I gather it is a driver for something or other put out by ATI and maybe including the name Rage. My question: am I right in thinking that it will be of no use to me who is a simple, non-game user? grandpaw

By updating the driver that is installed. Go to My Computer, right click and then click on properties. Click on device manager tab, scroll down to Monitors, click on the plus sign and highlight the name of the monitor.

Then click on properties, then the driver tab and then update driver, if it can't find one direct it to the one you have or if this doesn't work direct it to the drivers for the monitor that you are using.

I would install the correct drivers for the monitor if it were me.

Well, yes, Rick, I want the correct drivers for my monitor. But I assumed that if it is working okay, then I must have the correct drivers. The messages I mentioned don't say anything to suggest that I have incorrect drivers.

When I go to System Properties and click on Device Manager tab, I get a list which includes two items with monitor icons. One is entitled Display Adapters and the other System Devices. I assume the one I am interested in is System Devices. But I don't see anything listed either place that I can identify as the name of my monitor. Nor can I identify anything on the lists as a driver. The remainder of your instructions assume that I have been able to highlight the name of my monitor; since I haven't, I don't know what the next things is that I should do.

Can you clarify?

SOLVED. Stupid me, I finally did what I should have at the beginning. When I got the Driver Wizard, I mistakenly thought I had to alread have the new driver somewhere, not realizing I could to go to Windows Update, and not worrying because my monitor worked fine. Finally, I went through the Windows Update procedure, and no longer get the message that my computer had encountered new hardware. Before this, when I went to System Properties>Device Manager>Monitor>Display Adapters, the only thing under it was something about RAGE; now instead of that it shows Plug and Play Monitor. Also, I can't remember where I saw it, but there was the path D:\audio\english\drivers\win9xdrv and it was replaced lby C:windows\inf\monitor.inf. Don't ask me why I'm telling you all of this. Perhaps it's something I drank. grandaw
