When does your dial up connection window come up, right after Windows boots up or when you open I.E.?
Is your Earthlink conection using broadband or are you dial-up to it?

First thing is to go to START / PROGRAM FILES / STARTUP file and make sure there isn't anything in there that maybe trying to open the internet browser to update or run. Do you have Adaware or Spybot on your computer? I would run it and make sure there isn't some nasty program hidden on your computer doing this to you. There has to be something on your computer that want's to open the connection to update or otherwise, finding it is the real problem sometimes.
