What is the difference between an ethernet port or a network adaptor or are they
    the same thing?

An ethernet port can be found on your network adapter (aka. NIC).

A network adapter is an interface to the network, and most include an Ethernet connection. However, there are other kind of network adapters, Token Ring comes to mind, as well as ArcNet.

I think the real issue here is the way the term is used. Most of the time, when people talk about an Ethernet port, they're really speaking of the NIC.

Why the driving interest in the exact definition?

johnwill, I was looking for a device driver...the driver was listed as an ethernet driver on some
sites and an network card driver on other sites...

    thanks for the input.

They're both the same thing in the context you provided. :D
