Hey, im thinking of upgrading my CPU but im confused by the different socket types available eg.

    AMD Socket 754
    AMD Socket 939
    AMD Socket A
    Intel Socket 478
    Intel Socket 775

Can any one explain the differences between these and what it means in terms of performance etc?

    Thanks, NNP

Intel Socket 478 and AMD Socket A are supposedly slowly fading away. I think 754 socket for AMD is the new budget socket, and 939 is for the more expensive class. Not sure bout Intel 775

It depends on the kind of processor you have already, different ones use different sockets:

    AMD Socket 754
    - Sempron
    - Athlon 64

AMD Socket 939 (this is replacing socket 754)
    - Athlon 64
    - Athlon 64 FX

    AMD Socket A
    - Duron
    - Sempron
    - Athlon
    - Athlon XP

    Intel Socket 478
    - Celeron
    - Pentium 4

Intel Socket 775 (this is replacing socket 478)
    - Celeron
    - Pentium 4
