You're not getting one of those on-line pop-ups which is claiming that your computer is infected, are you?

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your computer has several programs running in the background that don't need to be. The startup list really should be trimmed down. If you want help in doing it, just let me know.

Well, to start with, I had a home page hijack, then I can't write to my CD burner (reports additional file w/o identity, and Windows One Care (Beta) firewall has been disabled and I have not been able to bring it up by any means listed. Slow boot, slow connection, general pitiful performance which may be due to the long startup list. AVG runs clean scans, Ad-Aware found some problems that I corrected, CCleaner has scored a couple as did a-squared. Ewido and Smit didn't catch anything (safe mode too) The HJT (1.99) file was short compared to others I have seen posted in the forum, Do you know where I could download the 1.98.2 version?

Popups are disabled. I know better than to believe them anyway. Reccomendations on the startup list? I haven't even looked at it since this started.

I dumped one care, but there are other indications of problems. I saw in an early post you had mentioned that the 1.98.2 would show the full file, while the 1.99 would be truncated by MS4HD / vx2 / lm2 attempting to hide. I'm running another malware scan tonite, and I'll get back to you with a cleaner system (I hope)

Thanks for taking the time with me.

I count about 9 running programs that can be disabled from running in the background. When you're ready to trim down the list, let me know.(y)

You really don't want to use an old version of HijackThis.(n)

    Get the axe!
I got rid of one care and did a tune-up. Seems to have taken care of the firewall problems as well. That's what had me scared!

What I said or what was happening was that if you had the version of MS4HD that was around then it would crash HJT 1.99.1 when it tried to read it's driver and as 1. 98.2 doesn't read or look at those drivers it wouldn't crash

    That no longer applies

Apologies for not understanding the information about the MS4HD/HJT 1.98.2 problem. Seems these pills that I'm taking after surgery cloud the thinking processes.

I do appreciate your patience in dealing with my problems, especially since they seem to be self-inflicted. I removed the bundled software that came with the new CD burner, and that eliminated the CD burning problem.
Do you mind if I spread the word about your expertise?

I know the feeling as I take very strong painkillers for a spinal pinj=ury and soemdays I am so cloudy I can't see straight

Many times new softwares do conflict so cause unwanted problems

please do spread the word about this site. We are always willing to do our best and while we can't guarantee to cure every problem we always do our best

I was on morphene for some years for chronic pain. You have my empathy. Have you been offered any alternatives? TENS unit, or implanted pump? Those can help if you have a competent Dr. to perscribe them.

The problems seem to be a result of an attempt to shortcut, and install periphials and software, along with a new CD burner, without operating the system between the various installs. It's what I get for being impatient.

I have already sent word of your site to another user that can appreciate the help. I will continue to spread the good word.
