Hiya

If you mean to get the software or hardware so that it can be used in XP, then you will need to check that there are updates/patches for the software and drivers for the hardware.
The upgrade to XP will work for most software, but not all hardware. Therefore, its best to have a search at the homepage of the program/product you have and see for compatability.
If you're unsure, post here and we'll tell you.

I meant upgrade: Windows 98 can be "upgraded" to Win98SE or WinMe. Can Windows 98xx (any) be "upgraded" to XP or do you have to buy XP outright?

You can upgrade win98 (any edition) to XP. You do not have to buy the full version.

you do have to buy the upgrade version though! :)
