Hi, i've set up a direct cable connection between a laptop and a desktop both running xp pro. The network connection says that i'm connected but i can't access files off of either machine. What do i have to open to see the files ?

did you shave the specific folder/drive/etc. If it's not changed to shared you won't be able to see it.

Select the folder or drive the info is on, right click, properities, sharing

The big thing to do is setup user accounts on both PC for the other PC, XP security is tighter than 98/ME.

yes i have shared folders on both computers but how do you view the ones on the other computer ? Should they be in my network places ? If so, mine are not, and i'm not sure what i didn't do and why i can't see the files ??

i can ping from the desktop to the laptop but not from the laptop to the desktop.. for some reason.... i think it has something to do with the user settings, it shows the direct cable is connected and there is activity, but in my network places i'm not showing any other network places or shared folders.

i can connect from the laptop to the desktop but not the other way..is this why the shared folders are not showing ? Seems like it should be easier than this to setup ... any ideas are helpful ...
