I get the message "program not responding" when I shut down my machine. The program being Direct DB Notify Wnd Proc.
I am running Windows XP Pro. I know this is not an unique problem as searches show requests for help, but no answers are given.
Is anybody familiar with this one?

That was also my post but I didn't get any helpful replies. I did find the answer but as it was around seven weeks ago and my memory isn't what it was, I am blowed if I can remember what it was. Certainly I can assure you it was nothing to do with any of the usual compacting problems or corrupted .dbx files, nor any worm, Trojan, malware, virus etc. I can tell you that I also had another problem with Outlook Express in that if I closed OE down during a session and then tried to open it again, I got the error response that a version of OE was already running. However checking Task Manager showed that MSIMN certainly wasn't running. That problem turned out to be my RSS popper that didn't close when OE was closed. By closing that first then OE the problem was solved. I don't remember whether this was part and parcel of the same fault or not but it might be worth checking. Otherwise there are countless reports of the "DirectDBNotify" problem on the web, but sadly no answers. Hope this may help.

I wanted to share how I fixed the error direct db notify error that locked up outlook express and when shutting down windows to reboot, then directdbnotify would popup as a problem causing Outlook Express to screwup. This happened starting about 3 weeks ago.
After compacting emails, removing everything that was stored in Outlook, no progress, even with other restoring to earlier restore points when it computer worked good.

WHAT I DID WAS THIS. I HAVE CA (COMPUTER ASSOCIATES) INTERNET SUITE ANTI VIRUS INSTALLED........HENCE, I WENT AND OPENED UP MAIN CA "FIREWALL" PROGRAM AND SAW, CLEAN CACHE NOW" I WAS AFRAID AT FIRST THAT IT WOULD ERASED IMPORTANT STUFF........BUT I WENT AHEAD AND PRESSED "CLEAN CACHE NOW" AND
WHAM, PROBLEM FIXED AND ALL WORKS GOOD.
SO, "FIND OUT HOW TO CLEAN YOUR CACHE" THIS SOLVED THE PROBLEM. ALL OTHER ATTEMPTS TO DELETE EMAILS, DELETED EMAILS ETC. DO NOT WORK.

GOOD LUCK, I WAS FRUSTRATED AS HECK BEING A REALTOR AND CONTANTLY EMAILING, IT NEARLY SHUT ME DOWN TILL I STUMBLED ON THIS FIX. I HOPE IT WORKS FOR YOU....... GOOD LUCK ALL........... ADAM

Thank you for the response to my problem. As you can imagine, as I posted this problem back in the middle of 2006 I have found a solution. Although not the same as yours, it possibly has the same root cause. My problem existed because although I had shut down Outlook Express, the RSS feeder program was still active. Closing that brought an immediate cure.
    Thanks for you attention.
