I have DirectX 7 "installed" but running the diag shows a bunch of files are missing - ddraw.dll, ddraw16.dll, d3drm.dll,d3dpmesh.dll, joy.cpl, gcdef.dll, dxtmsft.dll, dxtrans.dll.........I assume downloading and installing DirectX 9 (I am on WIN98) will fix ......(thanks for that tip on another thread)BUT - I tried loading DirectX8.1 from a games CD and got the "error extracting file ...not enough memory/space/disk whatever for swapping or corrupted cabinet file" etc etc etc message ...so any ideas if I will encounter a similar problem downloading DirectX 9 ? I cannot reinstall any earlier version .......and assume I can't restore the suddenly missing files ??? SInce I'm not a big game fan I'd be happy with my old version which used to work just fine until my files went unaccountably missing !

Hi
sorry about blank messages dropped book on keyboard.
I caused same problem with directX 7 by trying to download directX 8,I corrected this by downloading directX7 again from my systems board disk. If I remember I had a lot of trouble removing DirectX8. I run win98 as well, being a bit stupid about this it took me ages to realize where to find it. good luck

Thanks - but what is a "systems board disk" ??? So far I haven't managed to download or instal any higher levels of DirectX than 7. But if I try and reinstal it (from whicehevr games CD I must have originally loaded it...) it tells me it's already there and won't reinstal. ..Does anyone know how to REMOVE DirectX 7 so I could then simply reinstal it ...or this one of those things that Bill Gates doesn't want us to do ?

I noticed that .dll files can be downloaded from http://www.drd.dyndns.org but if I get them - where should I put them ?? As I don't have a windows 98 CD (as windows came preloaded on my IBM Aptiva in 1999) - is it likely these files are actually still hiding in the cabs folder somewhere ...and I can restore them that way ? I found DirectX uninstallers on this website too but I'm nervous of using them in case they mess with my system and registy - as I don't seem to have the capability to restore the originally shipped version of DX ...unless it is, in fact zipped up in the CABS folder - which I suspect ....

HI

go to start......then help.....in index type system file .select file checker.....select ,using file checker then diplay.
from here you can run the file check and it should give you the facility to repair damaged files

hope it works

OK - using a combination of DX diagnostic- which revealed which files are missing - plus system file checker (which you can in fact run by simply typing SFC in the "run" box .......I THINK I have restored the missing files from the "cabs" folder ...some wre apparently even missing from the cabs folder ....and I had to extract them from my other PC - copy them and then save into the systems folder !! Running DXdiag again now seems to show all files present and sfc doesn't show any missing or corrupted files, but I now suspect I have a set of DX files from different versions ! Next step is to reinstal the golf game and see what happens !! If all else fails I supose I could download and instal DX9 .....but I'm not inclined to sit on the internet for an hour waiting for it to arrive........

Hiya

You could try DirectX 8.1 instead. It works for me, as I'm on 2000. My other pc, Win98, is running DirectX 9.0.

If you go to this link, then using the drop down menu on the right corner, choose where you are.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/drx80a.asp

In the next site, you can rightclick on the link and Save Target as. That way, if the pc froze after downloading it, you can install it later.

Regards

eddie
