We use PowerPoint for our worship services in church. The church does not have internet access. Occasionally, various software tries to check for updates on the internet (e.g. virus updates, etc.) and this causes the PowerPoint show to freeze up in the middle of worship. Is there anyway to disable this feature so our worship is not interrupted?

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Automatic Updates
    "Turn off..."

Each piece of software has its own settings for updating. Most will allow you to update manually (less safe if people don't remember with AV). Check the settings of each program.

Is Windows Update one of the problems?

The machine shouldn't freeze just because it is updating, so you may have other problems. At least, you should go to Start > Run, and type:

    chkdsk /r

Answer "Y" to the questions and let the disk checker run on the next boot.
