I have high-speed DSL service for the first time, and my understanding is that this connection is "always on." So how does this work when you need to shut down all programs to do an installation? Wouldn't this put your computer at risk?

Also, my provider, BellSouth, offered to fix a problem by remote access, if I would shut down my firewall and antivirus; but I was afraid to do that. Would that be a risk?

I'll appreciate if someone can help me understand this.

High Speed DSL is not always on. You can disconnect. What problems are you having?
