Ok, here's my problem...we have Windows 98, and we've set up a task scheduler to run disk defrag, disk clean-up and scandisk at certain times throughout the month...i thought everything was going ok, but then i check the status on the disk defrag, and it hadn't run for MONTHS. the reason it gave was simply that it "could not start". i tried running scandisk through the start up menu, but it spent 5 minutes alternating between "checking folders" and "checking file allocation tables", and then gave me a message saying that scandisk restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive.
i've also tried running the disk defrag manually (through the start menu); it starts, and (i know this sounds stupid, but i'm so computer illiterate, and don't know the term for it), the little blocks were moving onto the towers, and my hard-drive was making noise and sounded like it was working, but it stayed at 0% for more than 3 hours...finally i cancelled it.
i just tried hitting ctrl+alt+del and shutting everything down except explorer & systray, and all that did was freeze my computer. THIS IS SO IRRITATING...i just want to run my freakin' disk defrag & clean up my computer!!! any ideas???

Go into safe mode and try to run it from there. If it runs it might clear up the freeze up portion when you try and run it manually. Findfast is probably the number one reason defrag never finishes running. If you have this running in the background shut that one down for good and take it out of your startup folder too.

Any screen saver, find fast, Power save options will stop the defrag and it will restart. You cannot have anything running like a screen saver after 10mins or so as it changes the settings and requires defrag to go back to the beginning.
Going into safe mode is also a good idea as mentioned.
