-Can anyone please help me fix my disk drive?
-It does not exist in the windows folder and it will not read any type of CD besides the "Windows XP Reinstallation CD".
-When I put in a CD you can hear it spin and all that but it WONT READ! :(
-I called DELL technical support (waste of time) after 3 hours all they could tell me is that its a software problem and not a hardware problem.
-DELL said I could call a software techline or somethin but it would cost $25 :mad:
-I would like to know if there is anyway to fix this D: drive software problem or whatnot

If it does not show in "My Computer", you need to open up the PC to ensure the cables are correctly plugged in (the ribbon cable, as the power one seems OK from your description) both to the drive and the other end on the motherboard.

If it still is missing, then you need to consider that it could be faulty hardware.

If it's listed in Device Manager with an error code, try this procedure.

Create a text file with the following stuff in it exactly as below and name it FIXCD.REG

Double click on the file and say yes to the merge into registry question.

----------------------- cut after this line, contents of FIXCD.REG -----------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]

Thank you guys for your input although none of the above had any effect on solving my problem.

If it makes any difference, when i go to mycomputer/manage/devicemanager
underneath DVD/CD-ROM drives is this...
LITE-ON LTR-24102M with a yellow exclamation point before it...

dont know what that is but it wont go away by uninstalling it...
or by uninstalling it and The Primary and Secondary IDE channel

I think my solution is to get rid of.... LITE-ON LTR-24102M
but sadly I dont know how.

well, before you remove it, what is hte brand name of the drive? That could actually BE the drive, and in that case, all you need to do is reload hte driver.

your first post didn't say anything about having 2 cd/dvd drives.
did you install them?
if there on the same cable 1 must be on master and the other slave.
