I want to add a screen saver to my pc. Normally you would go to control panel, display and then go to the appropiate tab. However when I go to display the only tabs I have are Settings, Effects, and Web. There is no screen saver tab or background tab or appearance tab. Nothing but the three that I mentioned. What do I do to get a screen saver?

The file for that Control Panel applet is desk.cpl. In XP it's in Windows\System32 - you may have to search. Not sure how you'd get a correct one, perhaps someone else knows.

where do i find this file for the control panel, and why is it this way. I was expecting to just go into control panel, display and be able to do what I need to do.

It appears that the desk.cpl file is damaged or has been replaced by a different version.

To find the file on your PC, use the regular Start->Search.

To replace it with the original version, run the File Checker tool.
