Dma ?

After two weeks of pulling my hair out trying to get a 40 gb HD into my machine it turns out that disabling DMA in the bios is the way to stop it from continuous rebooting. Now what are the ramifications of this action?

Its slower and will use the CPU more when transferring data.

If you post you're hardware specs and the problems you encounter, we may have another solution. But be detailed.
