I am thinking of buying a Sony DW-Q30A-B2 DVD burner. I see it's for a good price and the reviews aren't bad. You only get the drive. But when I googled the model I didn't see any manual or firmware information.

I can get along without a manual, but since I don't see any firmware info on the model does that mean its firmware doesn't have to be updated?

    Thank you for your time:)

For the most part, when dealing with firmware of any sort, you should only update it if it corrects a specific problem or updates functionality. That Sony should just plug in and go. Now, it's worth looking into firmware updates, just to make sure you're getting the most out of the drive, but it's not important.

I've only replaced the firmware on a couple of DVD-RW drives, specifically to cure some media incompatibility. Normally, I take them out of the box and stick them in the machine.

But there is no firmware for that model. Does that mean it doesn't need it?

The drive is a OEM version of model SHW-1635S according to http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=15850

I believe I gave one of these drives away due to it's lousy quality with Ridata media.

There is no updated firmware released by the manufacturer at this time.

According to reviews from leading authorities http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/237/9 , the drive has "Awful DVD+/-RW writing quality".

I would look at a Pioneer, Nec, or liteon DVD+/-RW, as those are very highly regarded with regards to writing quality. :)

When it comes to burning DVD's, the long lasting sweetness of a quality burn, outweighs the quickness of time spent burning. I'd rather have a slow single format drive with great burning quality, than a fast dual format drive that burnt coasters.
