On my Win98 machine, I frequently do a registry backup.

Is this required on a WinXP machine, or does System Restore take care of that?

Yes on XP System Restore does that but it always best to double backup.

How do I do a registry backup in XP?

In 98 I just did start/run/scanreg.... but that doesn't work with XP.

Backup Registry

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. On the File menu, click Export.
4. In the Save in box, select a location where you want to save the Registration Entries (.reg) file, type a file name in the File name box, and then click Save.

Utilities such as CCleaner, Spybot and others will prompt you to make a registry before continuing their cleanup of your system. The two mentioned here are freeware as well.
