Don't know how to start this safely...

Last spring my hard drive apparently got a virus. I did not then have any time of virus software running, as I had disabled it to run my programs quicker (dumb, i know). Anyway, I did not have time to deal w/it then, as I had some work deadlines, so I just bought a replacement hard drive & reinstalled the OS & necessary programs and files so I could finish my work.

Now I have some time. I have Norton Systemsworks 2001 loaded on this (replacement) hard drive. What steps can I take to safeguard it so that I can connect my old hard drive as a slave to this one, disinfect it, and hopefully recover some of the data and other files from it.

I am running Win 98SE, Systemax 550 AMD Athlon processor.
