Can anyone advise me the best free downloads for removing temp files etc. I have been using Treesize recently which was great, but to dear to buy. Something along those lines would be great. I've tried using Windows's own but I found it not to good.

I've just discovered this method of deleting temp files. I've wrote it down in the sequence in which I proceed. It is new to me but no doubt familiar to you guys. Is it a good, safe and thorough way of deleting the files.

    Control Panel> Internet Options> Browsing History> Settings> View Files> Delete Files

This is how you delete temp files:

Click Start - Run, then type in

    %temp%

    and then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in

    c:\windows\temp

    and then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

After you're done, empty the Recycle Bin and then restart the computer.

By the way, while you're here:

Control Panel - Internet Options - Browsing History - Settings

change the disk space to 50 MB.

It doesn't need to be any larger than that.

Worked a treat. Many thanks. Apart from the sticking drive, I can't believe how much quieter everything is running since completing all the alterations.

    Disk Cleaner.

    Start > Run:

    cleanmgr /sageset:99

You will get an enhanced window with more options. Once you have chosen your options, you can run it with the same settings by running:

    cleanmgr /sagerun:99

Since I have a lot of portable web browsers and other programs that make temp files, I need something that allows me to choose what temp folders to clean out. I use:

    EmpTemp

In the settings, you can set it at 1 day so you don't delete anything that might still be needed. Or you can set it to 0.

It also cleans out junk files, checks shorcuts and cookies, and has other uses.
