About 2 days ago I was on my AOL INSTANT MESSENGER when I noticed a link saying : bestfriends or funnybuddys CLICK HERE! in big bold letters. So I did of course, and finally learned my lesson, my curiosity killed it. It downloaded a screensaver onto my computer, and the screensaver never appeared. Then it froze my AIM and posted an away message with the same link I clicked on. It said WHOA OMFG! CLICK ON THIS and then the link. I really don't remember exactly what the link was, or the EXACT name of the thing that was downloaded onto my computer but I do know now that I had to uninstall AIM then install it a few times, and it still did it. I also used my AD-WARE and ran it a bunch of times, the customized way, the regular way, everything. Then I ran Norton, I ran it in all types of modes even in safe mode. Then I deleted everything that had to do with AIM, all of it's components off of my computer, and still when I went to install AIM, it still had that away message up. Now, after installing AIM for the last time it doesn't even appear, a message pops up that I can't install the program since it's already running on my computer, when clearly it isn't. So I pressed ALT CTRL DELETE and it didn't even run. I wanted to run it to cancel the processes on my computer, it wouldn't even run. I restarted my computer a bunch of times as well, still the same problem happened. I would like to know if anyone can give me directions on how to delete this virus/bug from my computer, because I am not able to use AIM or it's components anymore. Everything else works, but I do admit my computer is running a little slower. I would GREATLY appreciate anyones help. Thank You and PLEASE POST BACK!

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please do this. Click here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html to download Hijack This. It’s very important that you save it to its own folder on your hard drive, such as program files (not temporary files or the desktop), so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed.

I noticed I can't save any log unless I'm registered, and I'm still contemplating registering. BUT! as I read through the descriptions of the stuff they found I came along a worm/virus :X Yup, It is described as: VBS.FREELINK It is an encrypted worm virus written in VBScript language that is capable of infecting Windows 95/98/2000. This destructive virus is capable of sending a copy of itself through MSOutlook, MIRC, PIRCH and mapped network directories. So, how do I go about removing this? And is there any possible way of doing that without purchasing NoAdware v2.01? Please post back soon! Thanks once again.

You've certainly got quite a collection of baddies there.

Before you proceed with those instructions, please move Hijack This into its own folder in program files or my documents but not in the temporary files or on the desktop, so it can create proper back-ups and restore them if necessary.

Please download and run the following programs:

CWSHREDDER

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

Close all browser windows, open cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" and let it run.

Then restart your computer.

IMPORTANT! To help prevent this from happening again, you should install all the Microsoft security patches and critical updates.

AD-AWARE

Go here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
and download Ad-Aware SE Personal

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the bottom right-hand corner of the main window click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

Then, in the main window: Click Start and under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Then, deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

To start the scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

Restart your computer.

SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY

http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Open Spybot Search & Destroy (Click Start, Programs, Spybot S&D (Advanced Mode). Click online, Search for updates, Download all available updates. Close all Browser windows, Click ''Check for Problems''. Anything that needs to be fixed it will show in red and have a green check in the box to the left. Click ''Fix Selected Problems'', Then restart your computer.

Then, after rebooting, please post another log and we’ll see what’s left to get rid of.
