Hi Guys,
I keep getting a message from AVG that the trojan horse downloader.agent.k is found in "so and so file" (example: C:\System Volume Info/*****.dll).
When I run AVG it usually doesn't find anything.

Please help !!! My Computer is doing all sorts of weird things to me (example: loading up msn messanger 5 everytime i turn my cpu on, even though i've deleted it several times. Or my outlook express always gives me the following message "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: '127.0.0.1', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F")

Here is my most recent log file:

Alright, so first, lets update your HJT file because its waaaay outta date.

The link for the newest version - http://download.com.com/redir?pid=1...2&ontId=8022&destUrl=/3001-8022-10227352.html

  1. Download Ad-Aware 6.181 from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
  2. Install the program, open it check to make sure you have the latest reference file by clicking on webupdate. Make sure that your reference file reads [COLOR=red
]01R279 31.03.2004[/COLOR] (or higher number/date). If it does not, then click here and install the file manually.
  3. Make sure the following settings are turned to ON
-From the main window click on Start then Activate in-depth scan.
-Click on Use custom scanning options>Customize and make sure the following options are turned on:
    Scan within archives
    Scan active processes
    Scan registry
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL
    Scan my host-files
  4. Click on Settings and make sure the following are enabled:
    Unload recognized processes during scanning
  5. Click on Cleaning engine and make sure that Let windows remove files in use at next reboot is on.
  6. Finally Click Proceed to save your settings.
  7. Click on Scan Now from the main window and select Use Custom Scanning options and click scan.
  8. When scan completes, remove all items, then run another scan but this time select the Perform Smart-System Scan option and then also remove all items it finds.

then
  1. Download Spyboy S&D from this page
  2. Open and install the program then click here and follow the instructions for updating the program. Download all available updates.
  3. Run a scan by clicking on Spybot S&D and then clicking Search & Destroy and then Check for problems
  4. When scan completes, remove all items in red by making sure that they are checked and then click Fix selected problems

Alright, now for your virus - it is in the system restore section of windows. Follow the instructions in the link below to disable system restore and then create a new restore point and turn it back on.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001111912274039?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

Post a new (with the new version of HJT) log file after all of the above is done.

First download CWshredder from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk then Run it
Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

Now as CWS installs via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM, just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once you’ve run the above, it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

then reboot &

Turn off system restore by following instructions here because that is where AVG is finding the trojan
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039 for Xp
or here
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001012513122239 for ME

That will purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Then reboot & then re-enable sytem restore & create a new restore point.

MSN Messenger go Tools>Options>General (tab) and uncheck the "allow automatic sign in when connected to the internet" if you do not want it to connect as soon as you get online, or uncheck the first box ("automatically run messenger when i log onto windows") if you do not want MSNMessenger to start up at all when you start your computer (you will have to run it manually).

Also, I'm afraid i cant help with your other problem..

Hi guys,
New problems !!!
I tried playing a video using windows media player. When I dbl clicked on the file I got this msg "AVG has found Trojan Horse Downloader.VB.EC in the file C:\WINDOWS\pup.exe" and then I got a msg saying that I couldn't open windows media player. I tried to delete pup.exe but it came back.

I ran AVG but it found nothing. Then when I tried to run CWShredder I would get this message "You have a variant of the coolwebsearch trojan (CWS.Smartsearch.2) that has attempted to close CWShredder". It would still let me run CWShredder but it would freeze and close when it would get to the smartsearch.

Anyways, after running ad-aware and spybot I was able to open windows media player...temporarily

However, after a re-boot I tried to open windows media player and I got a message saying that the file wmplayer.exe could not be found.

Please HELP !!!
