I need help on putting a name to a program that I heard from a friend that essentially takes a download any size and splits the file into many pieces witch makes for a much fast download speed . Any Ideas ?

I would appreciated any Incite on this subject . :)

    Getright does this http://getright.com/
There are other applications, some free, that also do this. I personally found getright works the best.

FWIW I am not sure that splitting the file actually speeds up the time of download. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can comment. But what does seem to improve speed is the fact that getright can find mirror sites which sometimes are faster than the original one you downloaded from.

It has also been my experience that even though a lot of download mangaers will tout file splitting for simultaneous downloading, servers often (almost always?) have controlling software that will only serve one I.P. address request, one connection at a time.

In fact I've opened up GetRight on occasion and even though there are 4 connections, only one downloads for say 30 seconds then the next for 30 seconds, then the next and so on right around the loop over and over, not increasing download speed at all, but as stated, they will keep checking for faster mirror sites and switch over if need be.

So unless a server allows it, simultaneous download connections are just a gimmick.

Even if they work, download speeds are not appreciably increased. If there are truly multiple connections, there may be some gain if lags in one connection are overcome by downloading on another. But overall, your download speed is limited by your connection and not by the number of connections.

GatRight does have a lot of options and you can choose how many connections to use, including just one. The chief advantage of download managers is probably the ability to resume and pause downloads so that they don't need to be done to completion in one session.

What did you decide on? I forgot to mention Fresh Download which is also free.
